Compost.
When we throw away food we also throw away all of the natural resources used to produce and transport it.
Prevent this by putting tea bags, citrus peels, onions, all fruits and vegetable waste, and egg shells into a compost bin that gets put back into the soil, which in turn makes the soil healthier.
Not only does this benefit the environment and makes your trash bag last longer, composting creates jobs.
The SC Department of Commerce states that 1,400 jobs are created for every 1 million tons of material composted because:

The SC Department of Commerce states that 1,400 jobs are created for every 1 million tons of material composted because:
- Solid waste management is a mechanized process that relies on a modest amount of labor.
- Recycling is much more labor intensive.
- Material that is disposed of adds no further value to the economy.
- Material that is recycled and reintroduced continues to generate economic activity (i.e., jobs, businesses, taxes).
- The recovery of food waste creates jobs (e.g., haulers, composters, retailers).
Clean Plate Club
The Clean Plate Club just asks for a commitment to only putting on your plate what you think you can finish, in an effort to reduce waste. And of what you do put on your plate, finish it all if you can!
If you're a South Carolinian, next time you feel the urge to Instagram a meal, we challenge you to Instagram a clean plate with the #CleanPlateClub to spread awareness of food waste issues in the community.
